For son in college March 9, 2010 T. Patton (Denver, CO) My son called that his backup hard drive died and he needed a new one. I looked for a more rugged one with plenty of storage for him as he is a bit rough on things. He used a mac book and he reported they worked great together and no problem hooking up and using.
Great. Except when it stops working. Daily. on 2 drives March 8, 2010 D. Rademacher I bought this drive last year (2009) for use instead of a laptop, ferrying a full HD daily backup to and from work. Small, inexpensive, flexible. It worked great for about 3 months. Then it started cutting out and unmounting at random, causing all kinds of trouble. I'm on a Mac, and the Finder would freeze, as would any app trying to access the file system (eg to save files, open, etc.). The least-of-all-evils solution was to pull the plug on the drive. The system complains about ejecting, but at least you don't lose unsaved changes. I complained to LaCie. They first took the drive back and, as far as I can tell, erased it and sent it back (thanks for the high-tech help!). Same problem. Then they sent a "free" AC adapter (for a bus-powered drive). No dice. Then they finally took the drive and sent me a replacement. Worked great for all of 2 weeks. Now, the problem is back. I have no idea of this is typical, but I'd be wary of this product.
Lacie is working good for me. March 4, 2010 W. Watje (Grand Terrace) My use for this hard drive is for my MAC Mini which has only 80 gig native.
Via fire wire 400 (they changed to fw800 after this one) I run my system off the Lacie giving me more space and speed, at least it seems faster. Configuring the mac to do this was easy by looking up "running a mac externally" on a search engine and finding a how to or a you tube how to.
The hard drive runs mildly warm and after a month its still working great.
I looks and feels rugged like I might be able to drop it and keep going, but
I'm not going to test that part.
I'd like it if they had a 1tb this same size I guess this will come with time.
I am very happy with this for now.
Fastest Delivery Ever March 2, 2010 D. Passe (Freeport, NY) My review is more about my shopping experience with Amazon. I've had a Lacie 160GB for almost 3 years. No problems at all. I actually bought the Lacie 500GB to replace a Western Digital portable drive which corrupted 4 of my video files. I ordered the Lacie 500GB very late on a Thursday night and received it on that Saturday! I live no where near where it was shipped from. Not only was the product far cheaper than buying it at an Apple Store, but I got free shipping.
Rugged All -Terrain my Butt March 1, 2010 Jonathan Chan (San Diego, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a Professional Photographer and use external drives to take work on the road/backup. I'm one of those people who just wants things to work in the manner they were designed to. I don't care if its flashy or shiny or the has the latest bells and whistles...it just has to work. I've owned just about every kind of external HD known to man. Western Digital, Segate, Iomega, G-Drive etc. I purchased the Lacie per the recommendation of some friends. The FW400/800 Combination was a big selling point.
Initially the drive worked perfectly. Speeds were quick and it connected to my Macbook Pro immediately. [However, the supplied FW400 and FW800 cables from Lacie are both chunky and do not fit well. A slight bump will dislodge the cables causing you to lose whatever you were doing.]
A couple months in, I noticed that the FW400 and FW800 slots are both loose. Now the FW800 doesn't even connect to my computer. Despite the claim by Lacie that this drive is an "rugged all-terrain" External HD, it can't even hold up to the rigors of a studio environment. One that involves vibration-free desks, ideal temperatures and zero humidity.
I have since purchased a G-drive Mini to replace this finicky Lacie Drive. At about the same cost, the G-drive is much better made and I have had zero problems with it.
