2 out of 5 stars Off the mark   August 16, 2008
tshippy (Atlanta)
I bought this printer about two years ago and was very excited about the list of cool features. 4 hours after plugging it in I got off the phone with tech support. Turns out the networking doesn't play well with windows firewall. I never did get it to scan as designed-it worked if I initiated the scan from the PC, but not from the printer. It finally gave up the fight and I got the same failure as so many others I have read about. All the lights start blinking and it says "Reset Power". The best I can tell, that means throw it away and go buy a Canon. While you never like it when a product dies prematurely, I can't complain about its print quality, faxing, or copying. Only that it didn't do any of those functions for very long. Oh yeah, if you are looking at HP products, check out the driver size. This one took up over 700MB. Yes, It is almost as large as the full Windows XP install. And it was a total memory pig.

5 out of 5 stars Printer   August 15, 2008

This product does everything it advertizes. Almost as important, it had great installation instructions. They were easy to follow and for those of us who aren't computer savy, that is important. Only addition that would have been helpful is instruction on removing the program for our old printer or as we install the new printer, the new program replaces the old.

5 out of 5 stars Yes, 5 stars, with heavy emphasis on value!!   August 13, 2008

Ok, let me start by saying this is not the best printer in the world, nor will it blow the doors off other printers that offer film-like photos. It's an OfficeJet printer, which would mean that it's meant to be in an office. The model number should mean that it's meant for soho, but really home office.

For the amount of $$ that this printer is being sold for, there's really nothing that should be complained about. It's got a ton of features. Built-in networking is such a great feature, I just don't understand why all printers don't have this or wireless functionality.

Print quality is terrific for the typical business needs. If you need professional quality output, you better off going to one of those big box stores that provides printing as a service. It's probably cheaper in the long run.

The scanner is exactly what I had expected. I've been using it to scan business cards, 'photo-copying' documents, and for the fax portion. I also use it for those hard copy documents, that I would rather read on a computer screen.

The fax machine works like any other fax machine. Nothing spectacular there.

The software is probably the most interesting piece. My primary complaint is that this is got to be one of the biggest pieces of bloatware that any company could possibly deliver. I just don't understand why software for printing/scanning should take more then 100MB worth of disk space. Granted, with the size of today's hard drives, this shouldn't be an issue, but still!! The software does seem to be pretty reliable. I had only one hiccup the first time I tried to scan something to a file. At first the printer didn't trigger the software to start up and I had all sorts of errors on the printer. The only way I could get it to work was by calling up the HP scanning software ahead of time and then scan to a file. However, after that first incident, I no longer have had that issue and I also don't have to call up the software.

For general office use, whether it's printing, scanning, copying, or faxing, I would definitely recommend this printer on value alone. The fact that it's simple to use and provides great quality overall just further supports my recommendation.

2 out of 5 stars Poor scanning, limited lifespan   August 12, 2008
James Parks (Falls Church, VA)
Home use and my needs are very simple but this printer broke in less than two years. 'Reset Power' msg with all lights flashing and unplugging, etc. doesn't help. HP guidance is 'printer needs servicing'. Naturally, servicing costs more than new printer with cartridges. HP has always had bloated and poor SW and this is no different. Scanning works poorly, scanned documents never looked like originals, margins are off and text often enlarged. Couldn't use for a professional document. However, lots of formats supported. Software always wants to run in background and is not particularly user-friendly. HP has always felt that printing is the prime function of your computer and inserts itself a lot. Cartridge life is not impressive given my very low usage. My other printers are/have been Canon and Brother and the Canon is far superior to the other two.

2 out of 5 stars Color me unhappy with the product and company!   August 10, 2008
Wally Llama (Way North)
I've lost track of how many HP printers I've owned over the years. Until this one all have been more than satisfactory. The first problem I had with the 6310 should have been a sign -- "technical support" was almost useless, I eventually figured out the problem pretty much on my own.

The most recent problem was a "paper jam" error for one that didn't exist. I searched the knowledge base, tried everything to no avail. An email to tech support yielded the suggestion I repeat everything I'd already done. This dialog was repeated over nearly one week and it was apparent that most of the dialog was boilerplate interspersed with observations that I was a most valued customer. What wasn't boilerplate consisted of incomplete sentences and barely understandable language.

Ultimately, the "solution" offered was a "service plan" which effectively meant I could get a refurbished machine for slightly MORE than I just paid for a brand new one her on Amazon. (Horaay for Amazon; boo for HP.) When I questioned this I was told to buy a new machine.

When I asked for contact from someone with authority it was refused and I was given the phone number for technical support because email technicians are not allowed to call customers (the word "valued" was missing). A thorough search of the HP site did not yield any customer service function.

As a double irony, I was asked to complete a survey regarding my experience with the now resolved problem. When I attempted to the web site didn't work.

If you purchase an HP device, I'd suggest you start with the realization that there is no support and you've bought a "throw-away" product from a company that doesn't care much about customers.
